History

Our Mission

Intrada is both a record label and a retail store.

As a record label, we are committed to releasing quality film, television and game soundtracks on CD. Since 1985, we have combined a passion for the music with a history of professionalism and integrity, as well as commitment to partnering with studios and artists to develop the best possible albums. Our goal is to preserve soundtrack music for the widest possible audience for generations to come.

As a retail store, we are dedicated to providing a massive selection of major label releases, independent label titles, imports, hard-to-find collectibles and one-of-a-kind rarities. Our store is committed to providing expert advice, great prices and fast, friendly service.

Our History

Our retail history dates back to 1984 in San Francisco, when our small store on Vallejo Street was dedicated solely to soundtracks. As a one-of-a-kind institution in northern California, the store garnered attention from fans and collectors.

The following year, Intrada took the unprecedented step of releasing a fully-licensed, full-reuse MGM soundtrack on LP — Red Dawn by Basil Poledouris. This was followed by a second deal to release Poltergeist II by Jerry Goldsmith, beginning a fruitful collaboration between the label and a favorite composer. In the years that followed, Intrada began dealing with more studios and negotiating terms with musicians to make it possible to release more catalog recordings from Hollywood’s treasure trove of music.

Intrada takes great pride in maintaining a strong relationship with the composers it presents on CD. Our friendship with Goldsmith led to his first re-recording of a classic score (Rio Conchos) and his first concert performance at the same time. Licensing Silverado began another long-lasting relationship with Bruce Broughton, who assumed the baton for several of Intrada’s subsequent re-recording efforts, most notably Bernard Herrmann’s Jason and the Argonauts, regarded as a landmark recording at the time.

Since then, Intrada worked with more licensors and artists and our catalog of releases continues to grow. An early relationship with Walt Disney Studios has led to a more recent collaboration on “co-branded” titles such as The Black Hole and The Lone Ranger. In fact we have released titles from every major Hollywood studio including Paramount, Universal, Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox, and many independents as well.

In January 1996 our website was launched, ending an era of mail order catalogs, and in April 1999, the store relocated from San Francisco to Oakland. As of 2013, Intrada has released some 435 soundtracks (and counting), averaging two releases every two weeks.
