Tech Talk From The Producer…
Like Herbert West’s subjects, Re-Animator’s soundtrack has refused to die through its various
incarnations over the last two decades on LP by Varese Sarabande, then on CD by
Silva Screen and still later by La-La Land Records. Each version has had anomalies, ranging
from truncated contents to over-processed noise reduction reducing the stereo image.
This “ultimate” Intrada edition presents Band’s complete score (including music previously
unreleased) in chronological order for the first time. With access to the composer’s original
½” three-track masters, we are able to present the score with its the natural analog sonics
intact. Band’s scoring frequently had strings playing figures on the left with woodwinds
responding in kind on the right. As mixed by Smitty Price, this unique array was captured
with stunning detail, then enhanced further by placing percussion in the center and brass
and electronics throughout.
Ghoulies was mixed in stereo from the ½” three-track orchestral session masters
and represents that score’s first appearance on any format. Put both together, and
you’ve got a masterpiece of black-humored “horror” music that represents Richard Band
and Empire at their creative peak.
