Original soundtrack from classic William Wyler drama with Bette Davis, Herbert Marshall, murder, Indonesia locale. Max Steiner offers brooding score with interesting splashes of Oriental color. Melodic ideas are weighted, harmonic idiom is intense (albeit not severe.) While music plays in dark fashion, composer keeps everything moving with degree of urgency, pace. Neat quality! Steiner maintains further interest by weaving warm material for Leslie Crosbie (Davis) within darker textures of dramatic score. BYU presentation offers nearly complete score, mastered in mono from both optical tracks, surviving acetate reference discs from Steiner collection at BYU. Max Steiner conducts.
