Press Release from Quartet:
Quartet Records, in collaboration with Next Decade Entertainment, presents the ultimate remastered edition of John Barry’s classic score for HIGH ROAD TO CHINA, a 1983 adventure film directed by Brian G. Hutton and starring Tom Selleck, Bess Armstrong, Jack Weston and Robert Morley.
A classic tale of adventure, action, romance and breathtaking landscapes, the film provided Barry with the perfect opportunity to create a sweeping musical canvas infused with the romantic and refined style that characterized some of his finest work during the first half of the 1980s. That included such scores as SOMEWHERE IN TIME, BODY HEAT, FRANCES and OCTOPUSSY, and reached its peak with OUT OF AFRICA.
This new 2-CD edition has been mixed and mastered by Chris Malone from the original first-generation 3-track master tapes, transferred in high resolution. The complete score is presented in film order in the disc one with proper cue-sheet titles, followed by orchestrator Al Woodbury’s source music arrangements, including several pieces composed by Barry himself.
The second disc features the original soundtrack album assembled by the composer in 1983, preserving its unique mixes and edits. The package is completed by an in-depth essay by acclaimed film music journalist and writer—and renowned Barry authority—Jon Burlingame.
