Volume 3 of Alan Silvestri Cosmos soundtrack music premieres on CD with bonus tracks! Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey is epic 2014 continuation of famed Carl Sagan television series from 1980. New series features Neil deGrasse Tyson as host with cutting edge CGI, animation, science fact blending into new, compelling journey through space and time. Along for the ride, sometimes leading, sometimes in tow is rich score by Alan Silvestri. As with Volumes 1 & 2, Silvestri melds powerful symphonic sequences with intimate lines, sometimes enveloping them in rich swirling strings, other times enrobing them in lively electronic rhythms. Third volume gives emphasis to music scored for third episode of series. As humankind adapts to surroundings via pattern recognition, learns to distinguish safe environment from dangerous environment, predator from prey, so Silvestri’s music provides dramatic contrast between dramatic rhythms, powerful symphonic sequences with electronic ideas emphasizing forward motion. Amongst numerous highlights: warm theme for “Physical State Of The Stars” with noble French horns supporting strings, rich major chord harmonies throughout; sinewy oboe line and surging horns with strings leading to dynamic trombone figure in “The Way We Live Now”; strong thematic structure of “The Lead Herring” melding into stirring climax; tender new theme for strings, woodwinds and variants of secondary theme on piano that open “He Broke Through The Walls Of Heaven”; powerful orchestral climax for closing “Halley’s Comet”. As with Volumes 1 & 2, Intrada release of Volume 3 on CD premieres bonus tracks not available anywhere else. This is the third in Intrada’s series of four volumes devoted to Silvestri’s magnificent score for Cosmos. Album produced by Silvestri with his own comments in colorful booklet designed by Kay Marshall. Lavishly recorded by Simon Rhodes at Abbey Road in London, mixed by Dennis Sands, mastered by Patricia Sullivan at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Mark Graham, Gavin Greenaway, Alan Silvestri conduct.
