Finally! Two great sixties albums by Jerry Goldsmith make their debut on CD, mastered from the recently discovered original 20th Century-Fox stereo album session masters! Preserved in pristine condition in the vast UMG vaults, Our Man Flint and In Like Flint were short but exciting LPs that came out in 1966 & 1967 respectively. Both movies featured James Coburn as secret agent Derek Flint. Daniel Mann directs the former, Gordon Douglas directs the latter. Not to be confused with the Varese Sarabande release of soundtrack highlights, this Intrada CD offers both classic original albums exactly as Goldsmith recorded them, in crisp stereo with vivid orchestral color. Cool action, tuneful adventure and one of the composer's most famous themes all have their say. Included are authentic reproductions of both Bob Peak album jackets, classics in their own right, presented in our flipper-style CD cover. Choose your own favorite! These two albums have been amongst the most requested for CD release in our label's history. Wait no more, they're yours to spin! Jerry Goldsmith conducts both scores. Intrada Special Collection release available while quantities and interest remain!
Tech Talk From The Co-Producer…
It took nearly half a century to get these
two classic sixties Jerry Goldsmith albums from vinyl to CD
but here at last are the fruits of a long harvest. The importance of the original albums
for Our Man Flint and In Like Flint is difficult to overemphasize. The sounds,
the colors, the tunes, the excitement … all were dynamically re-recorded by Goldsmith
in vibrant stereo for the 20th Century-Fox label back in 1966 and 1967 respectively.
Both albums found the composer soaring with a
vernacular previously unheard, a propulsive display of global
action, romance, infectious melody, nefarious happenings
and super-agent heroics in kind … from the blasts of alto
and tenor sax to the ringing of organ and echoing solovox,
from the melodious touch of accordion to the power of a
full orchestra, Jerry Goldsmith went where no composer
had gone before. And enhancing both albums were nowiconic
covers sporting terrific Bob Peak artwork. Yes. Celebration
for this CD feels long overdue.
Adding to the good vibes: both of these scores
have been mastered from the original elements prepared
by the composer and his engineers back in the days,
recorded directly onto ½” three-channel tape and mixed directly from those
session tapes to create the final stereo record masters. These original master
tapes, vaulted by UMG, have survived in beautiful condition and actually afford today’s listeners with modest improvements in the stereo imaging,
especially in the center-channel information.
Purists take note. With these being beloved albums, well-engineered and
performed, we elected to retain the original audio dynamics of both. No additional
reverb, noise reduction,
changes in levels or altering
of the original EQ decisions
have been employed. And
in defiance of the current
trend that sees so many
masters being designed for
the sonically limited world
of mp3 and download
playbacks, there has been
absolutely no compression,
limiting or “normalizing” of
the audio on this CD. What
you’re hearing here is what
the artists originally intended.
While both albums are clean and remarkably quiet for mid-sixties analog
recordings, Our Man Flint exhibits slightly more low-level noise while In Like Flint
showcases quieter and more detailed sound in general.
So if you had these admittedly brief but just as admittedly classic records
way back when, enjoy a fabulous trip back down memory lane. And if you are
new to them, by all means listen and discover what the nostalgia is all about.
Enjoy now two sparkling, sensational Jerry Goldsmith albums on one CD!
