His stern father gives him a pony, and he learns some hard lessons about life and death in the months to come. The cast included none other than Henry Fonda and Maureen O’Hara, with Clint Howard as the young boy. The production was acclaimed. Fonda was especially pleased with the project (which was nominated for eight Emmy Awards) and said at the time, “Of all [Steinbeck's] works, and I’ve read everything he’s ever done, I think I like The Red Pony best.
