POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE, THE

Label: Intrada Special Collection Volume ISC 197
Date: 1981
Time: 1:00:20
Tracks: 27
World premiere release of Michael Small soundtrack for Bob Rafelson filming of noir masterpiece by writer James M. Cain, filmed earlier by Tay Garnett in 1946. 1981 update features Jack Nicholson, Jessica Lange as two lovers on path to murder, betrayal. Michael Small scores for full orchestra, emphasizes smoky film noir elements with dark motifs that slide in, then out, creating tension, finally exploding in violence. In balance is rich, thickly-scored love theme that surges with passion yet plays in minor, keeping pace with sobering mood of complex story. Intrada presents complete score from original 1/2" 3-channel stereo masters, includes score in picture sequence plus several extras recorded by composer at sessions with modest changes for never-materialized album. Released courtesy of Warner Bros., lovingly produced by Lukas Kendall, Neil S. Bulk. Michael Small conducts. SOLD OUT!

  • Tech Talk From The Producer…

For our premiere release of this moody and powerful score, Intrada was given access to the original three-channel stereo master mixes of the complete recording sessions, vaulted at Warner Bros.

The three-channel masters were mixed down to two-track stereo by Michael McDonald at Private Island Trax. Co-producer Neil Bulk notes that as he was locating paperwork for the project, he found interesting evidence of an album being considered at the time of the original sessions. Several cues were slated with the word “album” and actually given a separate take, with modest changes in tempo and structure.

Our CD includes the score as originally recorded for the film, in picture sequence. After the score concludes, we present an “extras” section with alternate versions of several cues including those slated for an album as well as two opera excerpts adapted and recorded by Small for the finished picture.

So go ahead and get caught up in the moody web of Michael Small’s The Postman Always Rings Twice, brimming with tension, taking rich turns into heated romance, twisting into violence and coming back to those origins of tension and mood. You’ll be happy you did.
