Two effective subdued thriller soundtracks on one CD! TELEFON is 1977 post cold war-era spy tale with KGB agents in spotlight, starring Charles Bronson, Lee Remick. Lalo Schifrin opens with terrific, throbbing suspense-action music highlighting left-hand piano. Suspense is keynote throughout score, but exotic color from cimbalom throughout adds considerable flavor. Interestingly, composer keeps his strings relatively subdued, playing long sustained chords with transparent voicing. Results add cold-ish curtain enveloping score with orchestral details typically coming from woodwinds, cimbalom, jagged snippets of brass. Strings do get swirling moments in agitated "Remember Guriyeva/Detonating Device" which also allows great conversation between muted brass, low woodwinds, percussion, cimbalom. HIDE IN PLAIN SIGHT is 1980 James Caan film with director-as-star, chronicling tale of man attempting to reuinte with abducted family, caught between government, mob. Leonard Rosenman writes brief but vivid score in trademark style, much of it unused in finished film. "Let's Go" is one standout cue with gentle strings in lead, pyramid/arpeggio devices & warmly complex harmonies shifting underneath. Rosenman creates warm family feel with degree of gentle motion. Another highlight: Agitated, pecking dissonance of "Followed on the Freeway", offering extremely judicious, transparent scoring for full orchestra with all instrumental colors getting some say. "Finale" allows composer to build lengthy ideas, warm music into fortissimo coda with brassy minor chords epically melding into composer's signature pyramid final chord. Both scores lovingly prepared from original session elements with superb notes by Scott Bettencourt, Alexander Kaplan, Frank K. DeWald offering insights to both films, respective scores. Lalo Schifrin conducts former score, Leonard Rosenman conducts latter. Both deliver knockouts!
