At last! Powerhouse early James Horner score for rousing Ted Kotcheff back-to-Vietnam hit with Gene Hackman, Patrick Swayze, Fred Ward. Horner scored action pic during incredible composing period of STAR TREK II, 48 HRS., BRAINSTORM, KRULL, SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES, TESTAMENT, other masterpieces. Kotcheff, hot off success of FIRST BLOOD, deals again with Vietnam vets in action, has composer create music both deeply moving, pulsating with action. Horner starts his signature military-style scoring method here, replete with stirring Americana trumpet solos over strings. Haunting device later graces APOLLO 13, GLORY, IN COUNTRY, COURAGE UNDER FIRE, many others. Action fans will get their fill with dynamic cues for tunnel sequence, helicopter assault, final battle & rescue scenes. Intrada presents complete score from mint condition 1/2" three-track stereo session masters stored in Paramount vaults, including all Vietnamese ensemble overlays used for powerful opening battle, subsequent POW search sequences. Tech Talk From The Producer…
One of the most exciting early scores to come from the pen of James Horner is the one that
he composed for 1983’s Uncommon Valor. To bring this powerful soundtrack to audiences
for the first time, Intrada was given access to the complete
three-track stereo scoring session masters stored in mint
condition in the Paramount Pictures vaults.
We are presenting the complete score in
chronological sequence for “The Album” portion of our
CD. In “The Extras” section that follows we have included
a parade march for drums and bugles that Horner
composed and recorded for a training sequence that was
subsequently deleted from the finished film. Also included
here is a cue entitled “Main Title Extension.” It is heard
in the film immediately after the lengthy “Main Title” and
was recorded by Horner at the sessions, but it is primarily
a looped rhythmic figure that simply repeats for the entire
duration with Vietnamese ensemble music overlaid within
it. In the film it is dialed in and out as it follows Gene
Hackman’s initial investigation of the whereabouts of his
son. Listeners wishing to hear this music and the “Parade
Ground” cue in their chronological positions can program the former cue right after the
“Main Title” and the latter cue right after “Tag.”
The “End Credits” music composed and conducted by James Horner is included at
the close of the album section of our CD, but it was not used in the finished film. Instead,
the original song “Brothers In The Night,” performed by Ray Kennedy, was played over the
end credits. This song is also included and can be found in the extras portion of the CD.
