Original soundtrack from James Cameron 3-D fantasy about world of Na'vi, starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Michelle Rodriguez, Sigourney Weaver. James Horner brings film music back to an art form, creates richly detailed, multi-layered mosaic scored for large orchestra, chorus, electronics, ethnic woodwinds, boy soprano, vocal soloists, more. Horner anchors with four-note motif but idea is actually more a chord progression than melody. Fascinating harmonic shape finds idea begins, ends with minor chords but plays with two major chords inside. Album benefits from lengthy cues, extremely coherent feel. Highlights are many but 11-minute "War" is a standout. Entire album gains from multiple playings. Leona Lewis sings "I See You" (Theme from AVATAR). James Horner conducts, hits the bullseye!
