THAT CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON
Label: La-La Land LLLCD 1110 Date: 1982 Tracks: 13 Time = 36:11
Original soundtrack from Jason Miller drama, based on his play, starring Bruce Dern, Stacy Keach, Robert Mitchum. Bill Conti opens with low string pedal, trumpet solo over snare drums that reflect on basketball background of tale, but composer generally plays to intimate character relationships of story. Wistful piano solos under gentle violins, solo cello ideas, delicate lines from solitary clarinet also figure throughout score. Conti uses his modest ensemble well, with solo colors taking center stage. Haunting clarinet, oboe passages during track 5, clarinet during track 6 are quiet highlights. In fact, solo clarinet becomes major ingredient of music, along with piano. Complete score is presented in mono with bonus tracks offering trailer music plus synth mock-up of end credit piece. Solid liner notes by Randall Larson provide details on film production & score plus track-by-track analysis. Bill Conti conducts. Limited edition of 1200 units.
