World premiere CD release of impressive soundtrack for Sydney Pollack mountain man tale set in mid-1800's, starring Robert Redford. FSM CD presents nearly complete score, drawn from original multi-track session masters plus 1/4" stereo mixes. Also included is early orchestral demo plus numerous cues from work tapes made by composers during initial stage of production. Final bonus includes three tracks as released on original soundtrack LP, complete with dialogue, allowing listener to program CD and approximate original LP listening experience. Score melds simple folk-song harmonic vernacular with beautiful balance of full orchestra, small ensemble of guitar, fiddle, piano. Solo colors from cello, percussion, flute also make appearances. Extremely informative notes by Nick Redman, Alexander Kaplan reveal fascinating details behind production of movie, insights into script by John Milius, tidbits about two composers, original LP assembly, more!
