CRIME IN THE STREETS
Label: Varese Sarabande VCL 0909 1099 Date: 1956 Tracks: 7 Time = 41:47
Original music from 1956 Allied Artists teen delinquent drama directed by Don Siegel, starring John Cassavetes, Sal Mineo, James Whitmore. Franz Waxman assembled jazz-orchestra score into three lengthy suites, then filled out remainder of dynamic Decca label LP with two concert pieces in similar vein, drawing from score for I, THE JURY as well as incorporating new material. First two movements of "Three Sketches" include warm material in jazz vernacular, third features considerable virtuoso clarinet work in lazy tempo. "Theme, Variations and Fugato" draws from thematic material heard at outset of CRIME IN THE STREETS (during "The Plot" on xylophone), proceeds with variations featuring alto sax, baritone sax, piano, trumpet, bass. Newly-mastered CD has same contents as original Decca mono LP. Franz Waxman conducts Los Angeles Music Festival Jazz Orchestra. Limited edition of 1500 units.
