  • Tech Talk From The Producer…

    Alan Silvestri’s score for Back to the Future was certainly an impressive milestone for the composer in 1985. In fact, it quickly became regarded as a genuine classic of modern film music. When the original soundtrack album arrived, it recreated a sensational movie experience via a treasure-trove of cool songs. But the classic score by Silvestri was reduced to a mere two sequences. No one could have imagined this would lead to one of the most requested film score releases of all time. But it did.

    It is with great pride that we realize this release at last. The best news is that we have managed to locate and preserve everything Silvestri recorded for this musical triumph, from his very first print take on May 16 of 1985 right through his final mixing on June 11. It was a lengthy scoring process. Customary with filmmaking, changes were made during post-production. Unlike the norm, however, was the unusually coherent shape and structure of Silvestri’s score—even as it underwent numerous changes to meet the needs of the unfolding picture.

    At the heart of Silvestri’s contribution one finds the musical interval of a raised fourth, more commonly referred to as the tritone. Whether highlighting melody or spotlighting harmony, this distinct interval ties everything together. Hearing the creation of Silvestri’s musical ideas from initial stages through final completion is a special treat. In some cases, the changes are striking; powerful trombone chords during the original Peabody Barn sequence bring intensity to the scene, while exciting and lengthy extensions to George’s heroic rescue scene bring considerable unused action into play. Some of the changes were less dramatic; muting a trumpet here, removing a cluster of rhythmic ideas there. But each cue grew organically from Silvestri’s fundamental tritone motif into a fascinating display of musical pyrotechnics, ranging from compelling mystery to clever adventure, from subtle tenderness to spectacular action.

    The complete score as used in the final picture is included on CD 1 and comprises material recorded mostly during the period from June 5 through 11. CD 2 offers a rewarding glimpse into the earlier May sessions and plays as a dynamic listening experience on its own. Two original source cues heard briefly in the film are both presented in their entirety on CD 1. A final original source cue not used in the finished film can be heard for the first time ever, wrapping up CD 2.

    Our presentation showcases all of Silvestri’s music sans the popular songs played by other artists. Since the “Enchantment Under the Sea” sequence unfolds in the film with several edits between period 1950s dance numbers and Silvestri’s original score, we elected to marry each of the tiny scoring pieces together into a single brief suite, beginning with Marty’s dramatic fading on stage through George and Lorraine’s final sweeping embrace.

    We were given access to all of the master elements vaulted at Universal Pictures. While the sessions occurred less than three decades ago, some of the tapes were already badly decomposing. Fortunately, we had everything available to us, ranging from 2˝ masters for the original source cues and ½˝ three-track stereo mixes right on down to ¼˝ two-track stereo masters and separate safeties. In addition, Silvestri provided us with his own copies as well. This allowed us to reconstruct virtually everything, making available for the first time anywhere all of the unused early May print takes right on through the final score as heard in the picture. While the audio quality is crisp and dynamic, it is worth mentioning that due to variances in tape stock and machine performances of the day, there are minor differences in the timbre (or EQ) of some cues depending on which format was used, the condition of the reels, or what number of tracks were involved. All final mixes and transfers were made at the Blu-Wav studio facilities at Universal.

    So just like Marty McFly would do…check your watch and set aside 90 minutes of your time. Alan Silvestri will now take you forward into the past and back to the future!
