Original soundtrack from Frank Sinatra WWII film with actor-as-star plus Clint Walker, Brad Dexter, Tony Bill. John Williams anchors with judiciously-placed main theme that reveals somewhat complex architecture: line winds upwards then down, drops several steps and unfolds in new direction. Incredible use of French horn throughout score a highlight, both forceful as in opening and busy as in action sequences. Other highlights abound but long, expressive trumpet on main theme during "The Final Fight/The Spirit Lives" is high amongst them. Ditto the dynamic brass flourish that closes score. You know a genuine composer is on hand when he finishes what he starts! FSM presents entire score in rich stereo from three-track masters, includes terrific notes by Jeff Eldridge plus dramatic cover based on original Warner Bros. poster art. Morris Stoloff conducts. Limited edition of 3000 copies. Magnificent production hits the bullseye!
