Original soundtrack from sensitive Robert Ellis Miller filming of famous Carson McCuller novel about deaf-mutes, starring Alan Arkin, Sondra Locke. Dave Grusin writes for orchestra but keeps story in focus via solo colors from oboe, clarinet, harpsichord, guitar over bed of strings. Interesting use of synthesizer, shards of country flavor, highly melodic ideas all command attention. So does extremely transparent woodwind writing. Brass are generally reserved for source pieces but even these display restraint. Numerous vocals continue highly melodic shape of score, add small southern town feel to overall score. This is beautiful music! Loving FSM production offers remixed, remastered original LP program plus additional chronological presentation that includes alternates, expanded takes.
