Original soundtrack from ambitious two-part Steven Soderbergh film about famed revolutionary figure, starring Benecio Del Toro. Alberto Iglesias writes for orchestra, works with very deliberate pace to build ideas, architecture. Numerous solo colors appear within orchestral fabric: clarinet, flute, bass flute, trumpet, many others. Woodwind solos get extra spotlight. Trio of strings (two violins plus cello) also play within orchestra, add another sonority. This isn't busy, flavorful music but dramatic, dense scoring with ear towards dark, somber themes, minor-key harmonies, growing power. Even march (track 8) plays more as throbbing, dramatic idea blending pace with gentle solo work (oboe, trumpet) as opposed to expected bright-stepping tune. As score progresses, violent content increases. Score will benefit from repeated listening. Alberto Iglesias conducts.
