IL GIOCATTOLO (COMPLETE)
Label: Cinevox MDF 629 Date: 1979 Tracks: 16 Time = 38:40
CD from Italy
Expanded CD of original soundtrack from Giuliano Montaldo crime thriller with Nino Manfredi, Marlene Jobert, Vittorio Mezzogiorno. Ennio Morricone melds several diverse styles into one unified whole: chopping, block-rhythm motif for left hand piano supplies sinister gangster element, easy-going solo cornet melody supplies nostalgic backdrop, haunting minor-key "Una Tenera Moglie" brings in saddened heart. Gentle, ascending bell arpeggios during "Un Giocattolo Nel Giocattolo" followed by guitar, then cornet usher in another pretty track. Subsequent "Una Tenera Moglie (#2)" further explores melodic line, gentle harmonies underneath. Gangster score with surprising degree of melody, nostalgia! Fans of composer's more complex, cerebral style will get satisfaction from dissonant strings of "Morte di Sauro" but bulk of score is warm, not cold. That said, bonus track 13 ("Telefonata Minacciosa #2) explores challenging ideas in some detail. Other bonus tracks offer variations of melodic ideas heard earlier - with the exception of track 15: here one finds the whistler, gently plucking guitar of classic Morricone westerns. Nice bonus! CD presents 11 tracks from original 1979 Cinevox stereo release, then adds 5 previously unreleased bonus tracks. Ennio Morricone composes, orchestrates, conducts - delivers a knockout!
