EYE OF THE DEVIL
Label: FSMCD Vol.11 No.1 Date: 1966 Tracks: 17 Time = 48:44
Original soundtrack from J. Lee Thompson horror movie with Deborah Kerr, David Niven, Donald Pleasence. Gary McFarland offers unusual score with interesting meld of jazz influence, orchestral sensibility. Ideas are expressive in jazz manner, flow freely but timbre is full orchestra. Very striking feature: languid melodic ideas, harp figures, haunting solo woodwinds, other gentle ideas play in contrast to dissonant harmonies, jagged string figures, brass outbursts. Cool stuff! McFarland (who dies at age 38) prepares LP for Verve label in 1967 but project never happens. FSM CD now brings it alive with original LP contents plus more, presents everything in stereo from 3-channel masters. Jack Parnell conducts. Limited edition of 3000 copies.
