World premiere of original soundtrack from popular late fifties monster movie, directed by Irvin S. Yeaworth, starring Steve McQueen. Offbeat title song in teen mode launches otherwise straight horror score with interesting structure. Ralph Carmichael (with modest assist from Jean Yeaworth) writes plethora of short ideas to support movie but gives each somewhat complete individual shape. Musical vignettes! Entire score plays as horror "divertimento" with abundance of tri-tone intervals, exposed bass lines. Even the occasional sweet melody on strings makes appearance. Carmichael offers necessarily short ideas but seldom relies on "stingers", instead actually creates well-drawn motifs for his modest ensemble (27 players). Strings get the spotlight, brass & woodwinds play at key moments. Crisp mono presentation of complete score including opening song by "The Five Blobs", authoritative liner notes by David Schecter, loving production by Schecter & Kathleen Mayne add up to generous package! Adding icing to rich cake are nearly 40-minutes of selections from Valentino Production Music Library. Roger Roger, Angelo Lavagnino, Mario Nascimbene create music for use in variety of film projects (THE GREEN SLIME, TERROR FROM THE YEAR 5000, BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE). Ralph Carmichael orchestrates, conducts his solid effort for THE BLOB, Schecter & Mayne deliver it with a knockout!
