KLUTE / ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN
Label: FSMCD Vol.10 No.16 Dates: 1971 / 1976 Tracks: 53 Time = 78:57
Two original soundtracks from Warner Bros. paranoia thrillers of the seventies, both directed by Alan J. Pakula. KLUTE is 1971 tale with Oscar-winning role for Jane Fonda. Michael Small creates varied score with melancholy trumpet-led love theme (used late in film but heard as opener on CD), transparent arpeggio-ish idea for piano, vibraphone, percussion, meld of relaxed & ethnic-infused pieces for variety of encounters with call girl Bree (Fonda). Neat structure has subtle arpeggio-ish figures for piano, vibraphone weaving throughout suspenseful tale yet never becoming dominant musical idea. Small works with no less than three major musical ideas plus numerous set-pieces but keeps everything unified via recurring harmonies, textures. Adding further coherency is female voice line over keyboards that recurs, brings chills. Richly melodic, spine-tingling score! ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN is legendary 1976 political masterpiece about Watergate, starring Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman, Jason Robards. David Shire anchors with lonesome theme for French horn (later trombone) over ascending four-note harp/guitar figure. Deceptively simple writing allows four-note motif to play alone or underneath melody. Shire also draws attention to throbbing bass-line, sometimes alone or in tandem with previous figure. Adding to architecture, Shire actually writes not one but two separate melodic ideas, one for horn, one for clarinet. Both play in fragments throughout. When composer says everything he's going to say with various parts, he offers complete theme, fully harmonized - finally - in full to close score. Powerful! FSM offers both scores in stereo from original multi-track session elements. Literate - and fascinating - notes shed light on 1970's cinema, director's career, two composers involved, movie backgrounds, scoring, more. Michael Small, David Shire conduct respectively.
