MAD DOCTOR OF BLOOD ISLAND
Label: TWP-202W58ST-01 Date: 1969 Tracks: 34 Time = 51:56
Original soundtrack from ultra-low budget Eddie Romero, Gerardo de Leon horror film with John Ashley, Angelique Pettyjohn. Tito Arevalo scores for modest ensemble that includes strings but favors woodwinds, small brass section plus percussion. Arevalo writes with economy but spreads instrumental voices to a degree, gives scale to his efforts. Orchestrations are clear, concise - never thick. Small chorus joins abundance of xylophone, timpani, other drums to illuminate primitive Philippine locales, tribal activities. One striking color is muted trumpet playing amongst woodwinds, another striking color is electric guitar underneath woodwinds, brass. Interestingly, Arevalo creates scary musical scenario not just with expected dissonance but via tonal material with somewhat elusive harmonic center. Unsettling! Labor-of-love CD presentation by Tim Ferrante offers entire score in mono from surviving master elements plus notes, colorful graphics. Tito Arevalo conducts. Limited release of 1000 copies!
