Two original soundtracks by Bobby Johnston on one CD. EXTRA: IN THE BACKGROUND OF A DREAM is documentary directed by Topher Straus. Bobby Johnston writes what are best described as "hooks": short snippets of melody over strong rhythms, scored for small instrumental ensemble. Throughout, bass lines, rhythms are given equal (and sometimes greater) weight to melody above. Harmonies are sparse, repetitive - and hypnotic! DEAD DOLL expands instrumental color with strings. Musical hooks still carry day but music is less quirky than former score, plays more as homage to Philip Glass, other minimalists. That said, Johnston still keeps ideas brief, often lets rhythm, harmonies & bass lines dominate. Fresh music! Bobby Johnston composes, performs.
