WAIT UNTIL DARK
Label: FSMCD Vol.10 No.7 Date: 1967 Tracks: 20 Time = 50:33
Original soundtrack from suspenseful Terence Young filming of Frederick Knott stage thriller, starring Audrey Hepburn as blind victim, Efrem Zimbalist as sympathetic husband, Alan Arkin as terrifying villain. Henry Mancini plays to suspense with unusally complex array of strings, de-tuned piano, harpsichord, guitar, sitar, whistler. Woodwinds, trombones play only in key moments. Main theme is haunting idea, initially for whistler with piccolo over rolling chords in pair of de-tuned pianos. Unsettling meld of theme (later known as "Theme for Three") and suspense begs applause. But highlight is incredible knife-wielding finale: after brief stinger, Mancini launches "Cutting Roat a New One" with intense unison low strings, tympani. Sequence builds, composer responds with increase in density, adds trombones. As scene grows more terrifying, composer works upwards, adds notes vertically while increasing volume! Wow! Splendid FSM production offers complete score in stereo from original elements, adds rewarding liner notes from Lukas Kendall, dramatic graphics from Joe Sikoryak. Henry Mancini conducts. Needless to say, landmark thriller music hits the bullseye!
