Original soundtrack from Leo Penn tale of jazz musician, starring Sammy Davis, Jr., Louis Armstrong, Cicely Tyson. Benny Carter creates jazz score with focus on nightclub music in solid small-combo mode. Trumpet, trombone work (especially when both play in unison) stands out. Piano solos against drums & bass also shine. General feel is moody, smoky. Some uptempo ideas play but Carter speaks to darker lines in story, somber finale. By no means relaxed, however - these are crisp, brilliant pieces with emphasis on solo colors, clarity in line, slightly piquant harmonies. Superb 1966 stereo recording faithfully presented on FSM CD with detailed liner notes, photos of composer, reproduction of original Reprise label LP art. Benny Carter conducts.
