Original soundtrack to original 1946 Edmund Goulding movie from famous W. Somerset Maugham novel about young man in search of higher values, starring Tyrone Power, Gene Tierney, Anne Baxter. Alfred Newman offers impressive score with regal, stately theme for full orchestra. In tandem is sinous love theme. Both ideas form basis of entire original score. Contrasting are variety of waltzes, fox trots, smaller ideas to assist geographic locale of story moving from Chicago to Paris to India. CD also offers plethora of source music associated with various locales plus renditions of Goulding tune "J'aime ta Pomme", later known as popular tune "Mam'selle". Presented in stereo from original elements housed at 20th Century Fox. Massive booklet features notes on film production by Rudy Behlmer, scoring by Jon Burlingame. Loving production by Ray Faiola (who also engineers), Nick Redman, Craig Spaulding. Alfred Newman conducts.
