DIAMOND HEAD / GONE WITH THE WAVE
Label: FSMCD Vol.9 No.9 Dates: 1963 / 1964 Tracks: 23 Time = 63:14
Two original Colpix LPs on one FSM CD. Headlining is Hugo Winterhalter/Johnny Williams music for Guy Green racial-political melodrama set in Hawaii, starring Charlton Heston, Yvette Mimieux, James Darren. Winterhalter supplies main them, Darren vocalizes it, but bulk of weight falls on young John Williams to adapt, arrange, conduct. Source-style easy listening idioms prevail but moments of Williams genius do appear: striking main title version with swirling strings, florid woodwinds over sturdy horn line in signature disaster movie guise one such example. Dynamic major chord-dominated finale for brass another. GONE WITH THE WAVE offers early Lalo Schifrin work for 1963 surfing documentary. While nods to surf-style music make appearance, emphasis is on hot big-band writing. Resulting blend of electric guitar with traditional sax, brass, piano, bass, drums is striking. Former score mastered from LP (source tapes no longer exist), latter score mastered from surviving tapes. Extensive notes illuminate both projects. Same musical contents as original Colpix stereo LPs. John Williams conducts Columbia Pictures Studio Symphony on former, Lalo Schifrin conducts top name players (Paul Horn, Frank Rosolino, Victor Feldman, Shelly Manne, others) on latter.
