PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST
Label: Disney 61447 Date: 2006 Tracks: 12 Time = 58:36
Original soundtrack from second installment of Disney pirate theme park ride-turned-feature, directed by Gore Verbinski, still starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley. Hans Zimmer takes over from Klaus Badelt, gets minor assist from Lorne Balfe, Tom Gire, Nick Glennie-Smith, Henry Jackman, Trevor Morris, John Sponsler, Geoff Zanelli. Action is keynote. Haunting quasi-music box tune makes gentle albeit brief contrast. 6/8 meters dominate action music with rousing "Wheel of Fortune" a major highlight. Typical for composer, short cues are jettisoned in favor of lengthy, well drawn setpieces. Also typical for composer, large-size orchestra is sometimes masked by plethora of electronic rhythms, synthesized strings. Chorus appears as well. Interestingly, every idea in score plays in minor mode, leaves dark, grim feel. Action isn't just heroic, it becomes weighted, substantial. Pulsating recording by Alan Meyerson made at Sony, Todd AO. Pete Anthony conducts.
