World premiere re-recording of complete score from classic Oscar-winning John Wayne western. Incredibly, it takes 27 years to get this done. Playing against type, Wayne introduces his iconic eye-patched Rooster Cogburn. Elmer Bernstein offers an unusual structural device to match. Not one primary theme to anchor but two! Main idea actually divides into two roughly equal parts. First part is ascending line, plays as melody for Mattie and her connection with Rooster. Second part extends at top of initial line, plays for Rooster's connection with Mattie. As characters are bound, so are twin parts to main theme. Two ideas appear alone, in tandem, in fragments, so forth. Adding to unique architecture, Bernstein introduces totally new melody to launch heroics. Not just a secondary theme, rousing tune plays as musical signature for Rooster himself. Energetic idea becomes tribute to legendary star, uses trademark syncopation that identifies composer as well. Tadlow recording presents complete score plus "True Grit" vocal (Keith Ferreira). Adding to generosity, CD also delivers suites from other John Wayne/Elmer Bernstein westerns.
