FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, A (EXPANDED)
Label: GDM 2066 Date: 1964 Tracks: 17 Time = 38:13
CD from Italy Also known as: PER UN PUGNO DI DOLLARI
Wow! Expanded original soundtrack from landmark Italy western, directed by Sergio Leone. Movie introduces Clint Eastwood's "Man With No Name", unleashes western music like nothing heard before. Ennio Morricone throws out Copland, tacets Americana, dumps broad western melody, jettisons virtually all folk tunes. What he leaves changes movie music forever: whipsnaps, guitar twangs, scales from recorder, chimes, voices, intense cerebral strings, ghostly drones, tape-manipulated brass clusters, everything but the kitchen sink. And there's strong melody to boot! Spanish flavor hovers above music that melds equal parts accessible melody, intense dissonance. Descending five-note scale for variety of woodwinds anchors entire work, everything spirals out from there. Popular music saw numerous releases on 45 EP, LP, ultimately CD. All were truncated, the longest being one side of an LP (simply repeated on side two of some releases in suite form). GDM special expanded CD offers 10 previously unreleased tracks from original 1964 mono session tapes, adds them in proper sequence with stereo tracks from earlier issues. Results allow familiar thematic-oriented cues to play against unfamiliar dramatic ones. New stuff doesn't just offer variations on old material, it leads score into whole new territory. Important movie music! Ennio Morricone conducts, scores a knockout!
