COMA / WESTWORLD / THE CAREY TREATMENT
Label: FSMCD Vol.8 No.16 Dates: 1978/1973/1972 Tracks: 52 Time = 146:51
2-CD Set of music from three movies linked by the common name of Michael Crichton. CAREY TREATMENT receives a premiere, COMA and WESTWORLD expand upon their respective original CD releases. CAREY TREATMENT (1972) plays as medical thriller, affords Roy Budd opportunity to write ample rhythm-based material. Main ideas are ostensibly in minor keys, move along via active drum section. For jazz fans, highlight may be "Blues" trio (piano/bass/drums) that features composer on keyboard. harmonies are picquant, tempo is lazy, results are exquisite. Budd offers same melody for variety of moods, alters harmonic scheme for contrast instead. WESTWORLD (1973) finds Fred Karlin welcoming splendid theme park to audiences with bright source cues for attractions of Western, Roman, Medieval Worlds. When things go wrong in old west, Karlin brings inventive meld of electronics, eclectic ensemble of acoustic instruments (trumpet, violin, percussion). Unusual textures permeate numerous robot repair sequences, avoid expected beeps and bleeps, manipulate drone effects instead. Latter chase sequences afford Karlin chance to mix meters, develop left-hand piano licks, muted trumpet figures into Morricone-ish display. COMA (1978) offers one of Jerry Goldsmith's most complex works, uses strings, woodwinds, piano for primary colors. Often Goldsmith gives equal weight to each group, bounces ideas from one to the other. Low woodwinds play main four-note motif one bar, high strings manipulate it the next. FSM set offers all three scores in stereo from original elements, adds significant material previously unreleased. Highly informative booklet notes describe each project, variety of scoring techniques, much more. Three respective composers conduct their scores. Limited edition of 3000 copies. Album aims for the head, scores a bullseye!
