HALLELUJAH TRAIL
Label: Masters Film Music SRS 2018 Date: 1965 Tracks: 13 Time = 36:33
Original score from sprawling John Sturges comic western with Burt Lancaster, Lee Remick. Movie overtakes Cinerama screen, tosses in cavalry, Indians, temperance marchers, militia, wagon trains, Teamsters, boozers and barflies, the kitchen sink! Elmer Bernstein score wraps single main theme around it all, captures outdoor western spirit with abundance of rowdy energy. CD (as does 1965 United Artists original LP) focuses on rallying songs, thematic highlights, misses majority of actual dramatic underscoring. That said, album remains fresh, vigorous tribute to Bernstein efforts. World premiere release from album master tapes offers superb stereo imaging, dynamic range. Bonus track - previously unreleased "The Bath" - preserves sole remaining cue from otherwise fatally-damaged complete session masters. Elmer Bernstein conducts.
