633 SQUADRON / SUBMARINE X-1
Label: FSMCD Vol.8 No.4 Dates: 1964/1969 Tracks: 32 Time = 97:40
2 CD set
Two rousing WWII scores from the sixties. Similarities abound: both projects offer British episodes with action against Germany up above, down below, both play to dynamic military combat music by Ron Goodwin. 633 SQUADRON has seen numerous incarnations through LP, CD releases but gets most thorough issue to date with current FSM double-header. SUBMARINE X-1 makes album debut from stereo elements managed by composer. As with other war music from Goodwin (BATTLE OF BRITAIN, OPERATION CROSSBOW, so forth), note interesting use of major chords throughout. Composer relies on rich sonority throughout everything: main themes, ancillary marches, suspense motifs, action music, you name it. While chaos of combat is present, Goodwin aims for stirring, patriotic melodies, proud, accessible harmonies. By no means "British light music", these are dynamic works with bristling edge. Ron Goodwin conducts.
