Expanded release of rousing John Debney score for ill-fated pirate epic with Geena Davis. Mammoth work by Debney offers treasure-trove of ideas both large, small. Composer gives triumphant display of requisite swash and buckle but tosses in nifty hook - nearly every idea begins in minor! Debney splashes dynamic action in stirring Korngold/Newman/Rozsa - even Horner - traditions but by rooting melodies in minor he gets degree of emotional depth with his architecture. Energy with feeling! Score also buys considerable real estate with very strong main theme. Here, rousing minor-key theme (with striking "dorian mode" dip into major) serves literally as anchor for gargantuan two hour work. Whether playing as long melodic line or plunging into fray of battle as brief fanfare-motif, Debney's main theme lends welcome coherency. Even with full score's extreme length, tune never tires! Prometheus double-CD expands on both earlier editions, adds plethora of cues previously unreleased. Many bring degree of dark mood, suspense to pace the action. Fans may ponder need for lengthening already-generous original CDs - but why carp? Now there's more energy to burn. Major highlight: climactic 27-minutes plays in two ambitious movements.
