Original soundtrack from Mauro Bolognini TV movie starring Liv Ullman, Peter Fonda. Morricone anchors period drama about middle class family life and honor with brooding main theme in minor key. Interesting structure allows theme to unwind in small phrases: violins weave descending motif while cellos, violas compliment underneath with ascending idea. Theme works into subconscious, lingers throughout entire score. In balance is gently nostalgic theme for clarinet ("Trionfo d'Amore") in major key. Still, emphasis is on darker mood. Strings often play in lower registers, colors are often muted, harmonies are often somber. Ennio Morricone conducts.
