FOXES OF HARROW, THE
Label: SAE-CRS-012 Date: 1947 Tracks: 26 Time = 53:44
World premiere of original soundtrack from 20th Century-Fox drama set in 1820's New Orleans, starring Rex Harrison, Maureen O'Hara. David Buttolph anchors with two contrasting themes drawn differently as night, day. First is upwards-leaping fanfare idea for brass, strings. Over bristling rhythms it melds Stephen Fox (Rex Harrison) with House of Harrow, pursuits of fame. Second idea brings warm diatonic-ish line for strings, associates with Odalie D'Arceneaux (Maureen O'Hara). Buttolph also brings considerable dramatic scope to tale with dark-edged ideas for gambling relationships, slave sequences, Mississippi river settings. Waltzes (from DRAGONWYCK), "voodoo drums" and Creole songs fill out CD. SAE offers complete score (including source material) from original master elements preserved in terrific shape. Dual-channel optical recordings allow stereo presentation with remarkable fidelity. Lavish booklet with authoritative notes by Jon Burlingame and producer Ray Faiola complete lavish package. Alfred Newman conducts.
