CABOBLANCO (REISSUE)
Label: Prometheus PCD 127 Date: 1980 Tracks: 12 Time = 39:23
CD from Belgium
Reissue of original soundtrack from 1980 J. Lee Thompson adventure with Charles Bronson. Film makers monkey with plot, characters - even title - of CASABLANCA, provide Jerry Goldsmith with terrific opportunity to create South America flavor music for orchestra with plethora of extra percussion, guitar. Interestingly, Goldsmith works three important themes into score, all with emphasis on major keys. Main theme is two-part idea: first, a generally rising melody against lively rhythm, second, a rapid arpeggio theme over virtuoso repeating figures. Both parts offer Spanish tinge. Former is richly melodious, second is rhythmically striking. Elsewhere, Goldsmith uses Ray Noble tune ("The Very Thought of You") as anchor for WWII-era setting. Third theme is major-key idea for guitar, given prominence in vocal guise as "Heaven knows", sung by composer's wife Carol Heather. But score offers more. Small four-note motif serves as launching pad for adventure, action set pieces. Statement by tuba in latter sequences a highlight. Swirling strings, virtuoso trumpets in "Boat Attack/Jungle Run" a tour-de-force! Prometheus reissue offers same contents as earlier album but updates artwork, remasters sound. Jerry Goldsmith conducts National Philharmonic Orchestra.
