EXTREME PREJUDICE (EXPANDED)
Label: La-La Land LLLCD 1028 Date: 1987 Tracks: 20 Time = 64:12
Expanded reissue of soundtrack to Walter Hill contemporary western set between Texas and Mexico, starring Nick Nolte. Jerry Goldsmith offers colorful score, centers activity around three vastly contrasting ideas: chopping two-note figure, extension of it into full melodic idea, colorful "quasi-pan flute" motif for below-the-border flavor. Haunting trumpet solo on second idea during "Cash" is one of many highlights. Score has further distinction of showcasing one of composer's last "signature" end titles - where an idea (here, the third) is worked steadily in fully-drawn manner, closing with strong coda. Original 50-minute Intrada album is remastered, expanded by La-La Land to include several shorter pieces plus lengthier electronic cues composer created when bank robbery sequence was rescored. Excellent liner notes (Messrob Torikian, Dan Goldwasser) give insight to genre, film production, comments (by Hill), more. Jerry Goldsmith conducts Hungarian State Opera Orchestra. Knockout!
