Original soundtrack from ambitious seven-part ABC TV mini-series directed by Donald Wrye, starring Kris Kristofferson, Robert Urich. Film chronicles events after Soviet takeover of America, focuses on mid-west in general, Nebraska family in particular. Basil Poledouris recognizes inherent action in long tale but anchors multi-layered score in subtext: willpower to endure oppression, adapt, resist, rebuild. Results are balance between dark 'occupation' music and 'indomitable spirit' music. Numerous themes appear but musical heart lies in sweeping anthem for American courage. Interesting use of descending melodic line throughout score, sometimes prelude to anthem, sometimes haunting idea unto itself. Moving highlight: emotional build of melodic line through orchestra during "The Homeless' March". Another highlight: opening line for brass in octaves over pedal in bass. Here composer refuses to harmonize line until end of phrase, then finally allows thick major chords for coda. Powerful! Basil Poledouris conducts Hollywood Symphony Orchestra. Knockout!
