Exciting original soundtracks from pair of National Geographic TV Specials that aired on CBS in 1967. CD features two legendary Americana composers at the peak of their powers. YANKEE SAILS ACROSS EUROPE by Elmer Bernstein (31:10): Documentary about famed sailing vessel making variety of journies through European waters. Bernstein creates beautiful waltz melody for European locale, surrounds it with energetic sailing motif for ship. Dynamic French horn motif as Yankee navigates the seas, stirring fanfare as she passes Cathedral of Notre Dame are two of many highlights. GRIZZLY! by Jerome Moross (30:36): Twin ecologists study, document habitats of wild North American bears. Moross creates rhythmic "western" theme as anchor, embellishes with various treatments (adventure, playful, gentle harmonica, etc.) Sweeping horn line, woodwind flurries during "Fly Fishing" sequence one of many highlights. Both scores presented complete, in mono from original session elements. Each includes all "bumpers" leading to, from commercials. Also featured is full-length (and rarely heard) extended version of Bernstein's powerful National Geographic main theme - itself a TV scoring landmark. Elmer Bernstein & Jerome Moross conduct.
