DREAMER OF OZ, THE
Label: Percepto PER014 Date: 1990 Tracks: 22 Time = 35:27
L. Frank Baum is the man, "The Wizard Of Oz" his legacy. Richard Matheson scripts, Jack Bender helms, John Ritter acts. From all this, Lee Holdridge finds inspiration to create warm - incredibly gentle - portrait of America in late 1900's. Two themes dominate, several smaller ideas make appearance. For broader tale of Baum's fantasies, marriage, creative journeys, Holdridge uses warm melody in strings. For sadder story of Baum's 4-year-old niece Dorothy (real-life inspiration for Oz character) suffering fatal battle with illness, Holdridge draws on melancholy piano theme. Elsewhere, harmonica and guitar bring Americana flavor to 45-piece orchestra. Lee Holdridge conducts. Top-drawer CD production replete with profuse liner notes, rich graphics, numerous stills. Beautiful music, knockout album!
