Label: FSMCD Vol.6 No.2 Date: 1968 Tracks: 15 Time: 79:20
Wow! Epic Cinerama-size filming of Alistair MacLean's coldwar espionage thriller has dynamic music to match. Previous truncated issues of score emphasized bright fanfare main theme. This magnificent FSM issue offers greatly expanded presentation in superior stereo sound from original multi-track elements. Now discover wealth of aggressive new action music, orchestral detail including harpsichord, bells, various percussion. Score highlight: Legrand achieves excitement in action music not through dissonance or density, rather with jagged linear ideas in unison, punctuated by orchestra. Audio highlight: splendid mix sends trumpets, trombones to far right, spreads French horn section throughout center, gives prominence to exciting interplay within brass section. If this isn't enough, solid liner notes by Jeff Bond, Lukas Kendall (wearing second hat as producer) complete this stunner. One of the popular big-scale movie scores from the sixties gets royal treatment. Bullseye!
